Finest Finish drywall taping and mudding services for strong, smooth and fire safe walls.
Taping and mudding has both an aesthetic and a functional purpose; it makes your walls smooth, safe, fire resistant and ready for painting. Drywall taping and mudding is so important it is actually part of many building codes. Taping and mudding are used to cover the seams where sheets of drywall meet, providing strength and support, smoothing the connection and protecting underlying wires and plumbing from moisture and pests. But the main reason taping and mudding is included in building codes is its role in fire safety. Drywall itself is fire resistant, but if the seams aren’t sealed with a fire resistant material, like drywall mud, the ability of drywall to stop fire from spreading will be compromised.
Finest Finest has years of experience with drywall taping and mudding in Victoria B.C. Our attention to detail and our commitment to doing the job right is exactly what is needed for a flawless finish that will stand the test of time and will keep your family safe.
I hired the team at Finest Finish to undertake re-skimming the entirety of my 1960’s condo, walls & ceilings. Dylan, was very professional, and explained the entire process to me clearly, and in great detail. The drywallers who showed up to do the were phenomenal, very hard working, punctual, and respectful. I appreciated they brought their dustless sanding machine to protect my home during the process. I am very grateful to have come across this company, who truly delivers on what they say! 10/10 will recommend to all my friends and family!

Taping and mudding drywall is essential for achieving a smooth, polished finish on your walls. This process involves several critical steps, including preparation, applying coats of joint compound, and finishing touches. Here’s a detailed, step-by-step guide to help you get professional results.
The foundation of a successful drywall finish begins with thorough preparation. Start by cleaning the drywall surface to remove any dust or debris. Loose paper or damaged areas should be addressed by removing any frayed edges and filling gaps or imperfections with joint compound. Allow these patches to dry completely before proceeding.
With the surface prepared, mix the joint compound to a creamy consistency, adjusting thickness with water if needed. Use a 6-inch taping knife to apply a thin, even layer of joint compound over the seams and screw or nail holes. Lay drywall tape over the wet compound, centering it on the seam. For paper tape, press it down firmly with the knife. For fiberglass tape, place it over the seam and apply more compound on top.
Spread a thin layer of joint compound over the tape, embedding it completely. Smooth out excess mud and feather the edges to blend seamlessly with the surrounding drywall. Allow the first coat to dry for approximately 24 hours.
After the first coat has dried, inspect the seams for any imperfections. Lightly sand the area using medium-grit sandpaper or a sanding sponge to achieve a smooth surface. Be gentle to avoid damaging the drywall. Wipe away dust with a damp cloth to prepare for the second coat.
The second coat should be applied with a 12-inch taping knife to create a broader, smoother surface. Apply a thicker layer of joint compound, extending it several inches beyond the edges of the first coat. Smooth and feather the edges to blend into the drywall. Allow this coat to dry completely before inspecting and sanding.
Applying a third coat of joint compound is crucial for achieving a flawless finish, especially if imperfections remain after the second coat. The third coat should be applied as follows:
Preparation for the Third Coat: Once the second coat is dry and sanded, assess the surface. If you notice any remaining imperfections or inconsistencies, a third coat will help address these issues. Ensure the surface is clean and free of dust before applying the new layer of compound.
Application: Use the 12-inch taping knife to apply the third coat. This layer should be even thinner than the second coat, applied delicately to correct any remaining high spots or uneven areas. The goal of the third coat is to smooth out the surface completely and refine the finish.
Feathering and Smoothing: As with the previous coats, spread the joint compound evenly and feather the edges to blend seamlessly with the surrounding drywall. Be cautious to avoid over-applying the compound, which can create new ridges or imperfections.
Drying and Sanding: Allow the third coat to dry thoroughly. This may take up to 24 hours, depending on environmental conditions. Once dry, sand the area with fine-grit sandpaper to achieve a perfectly smooth finish. Light, even sanding is crucial to avoid damaging the surface.
After the third coat is dry and sanded, inspect the drywall for any remaining imperfections. Perform any touch-ups if needed, and sand again if necessary to achieve a flawless surface. Clean the area thoroughly to remove dust and debris, which can affect the primer and paint application.
Apply a drywall primer to seal the joint compound and create a uniform surface for painting. Choose a primer specifically designed for drywall and apply it evenly over the entire surface. Once the primer is dry, you can proceed with painting. Use quality paint and apply it in even strokes, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying additional layers.

As the owner of HSC Carpentry and a contractor/carpenter with over a decade of experience in custom homes, i can not express enough how important it is to choose the right trade for the job. As someone who does this type of work because he truly loves what he does, it is very hard to come by other trades who share the same mentality. I've seen many times now where drywallers would do poor work, and the screws and seams would fail/pop through after only a short period of time and completely ruin a beautiful home. At Finest Finish, I can guarantee you that this will not happen. Working with his crew many times and seeing their system in play, i can guarantee you that not only will their work look amazing the day after, but many, many years to come. You will not find a better drywall company in Victoria. By all means, they are not cheap. But I can promise you that their quality is worth the price. Working closely with both Dylan and Colten, i can also tell you the quality of work isn't the only thing you're paying for. They both give some of the best customer service I've seen on a jobsite. I highly recommend Finest Finish Painting & Drywall. Giuseppe ValentinoTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Mike TeachmanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We hired Finest Finish to modernize 3 rooms in our 1913 house. The crux of the job was painting the stained wainscoting and cabinetry which showed many years of wear and tear. Dylan and Colten from Finest Finish exhibited exceptional technical knowledge, solid execution, quality of work, punctuality, and went above and beyond to accommodate our project during the holiday season. The end result exceeded our expectations on what was possible. We highly recommend them. Geoff de RuiterTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I was given some really good information on floor sound isolation. Very kind Dylan to take the time on the phone to help for my strata. Ryan BTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. As a contractor, I’ve never written a 5-star review for a finishing company before, but Dylan, Colten and their team at Finest Finish earned it. They went above and beyond, and I’ve definitely found my go-to finishing crew for this often-overlooked and hard-to-find trade. I usually get at least three bids for finish work, and this job was quite challenging as a heritage house with a lot of drywall repairs as well as new drywall and soundproofing in the new suite. Dylan was the first guy to actually walk through the site, take proper measurements, and write up a detailed job scope. His quote was super thorough, came in under the others, and I knew nothing was missed. The job started exactly when they said it would and finished right on time. I was blown away by the attention to detail at every stage. We even did a Sonopan install for soundproofing, and Dylan had great recommendations for insulation and soundproofing that taught me a lot. He answered every call and stayed on top of everything - communication like that is almost unheard of in this trade. From now on, Finest Finish will be my first call for drywall and finishing work. Michael T (Slade)Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. From providing the quote to the final product, Finest Finish Painting & Drywall met and/or exceeded expectations. Their quote was competitive, and they provided and met a timeline as to when they would start and finish the project. Timelines are crucial for any renovation project since the next trade was scheduled for the day after they cleaned up. Professional, personable, a pleasure to work with, and the end product was perfect.Showing our latest reviews
